In a pinch, cross-species feeding is safe on a temporary basis. For longer-term regular feeding, we do recommend sticking to the species-appropriate diet:

• Feeding cat food to a dog: Cat recipes contain less fiber and produce than dog recipes. An added fiber supplement may be helpful if feeding cat food to a dog for more than a day or two.
• Feeding dog food to a cat: Dog recipes contain more produce than cat recipes but are otherwise safe for cats short-term.

For regular feeding, the correct species diet ensures your pet gets the right balance of nutrients for their specific needs.
