Why is Smallbatch freeze-dried food higher in fat than frozen raw?Updated a month ago
Freeze-dried foods often appear higher in fat because the freeze-drying process removes nearly all moisture (typically under 5%). With water removed, nutrients like fat become more concentrated — which raises the percentages on the label even though the actual fat content of the food may be very similar to frozen raw.
Frozen raw contains significantly more moisture, which naturally lowers the percentage of fat on an as-fed basis.
The most accurate way to compare fat content across formats is on a dry matter basis (with moisture removed from the equation) — when evaluated this way, freeze-dried and frozen raw recipes are much more comparable.
For leaner options across both formats, Chicken, Turkey, Pork, and Rabbit tend to be the lowest-fat proteins in the Smallbatch lineup.
