Redmond Real Sea Salt FAQSUpdated 11 days ago

Our 2026 recipe improvements include the thoughtful, minimal addition of Redmond's Real Sea Salt to our frozen raw and Lightly Cooked recipes for dogs. Below we've rounded up some FAQs so you can feel confident in this improvement:

Why is there Redmond Real Salt in all raw and lightly cooked diets now?

Smallbatch continuously monitors natural variation in whole food ingredients. Our latest 12-month review showed that adding a touch of high-quality sea salt keeps every recipe aligned with the levels pets naturally require for optimal cellular function. We use only the minimum amount, and our sea salt also provides additional naturally occurring trace minerals.

Why Redmond Real Salt?

Prioritizing purity and responsible sourcing is important to us. Redmond Real Salt comes from an ancient seabed deposit in central Utah that formed millions of years ago when an inland sea receded. The salt layer has been naturally protected by layers of volcanic ash and clay, helping shield it from modern environmental pollutants. The salt is mined, unrefined, and free from additives, retaining a natural spectrum of more than 60 trace minerals according to the company’s research and operations since the late 1950s.

My dog cannot have salt. What should I do?

We use only a very small amount of salt in our recipes, just a fraction of a percent, to help maintain nutritional consistency. If your dog has a medical condition that requires strict sodium control, we recommend considering our Freeze-Dried Small Bites, which are formulated for adult maintenance and require less sodium, or our Base Blends, which allow you to work with your veterinarian to create a recipe tailored to your dog’s specific needs.

Was my dog getting too little sodium before?

No, but natural variance is always a factor in utilizing exclusively whole foods to craft a batch. After careful recipe testing and consideration, we’re confident in the assurance the addition provides as well as the added benefits, inherent to this high-quality sea salt.
